Madeleine McCann Madeleine McCann
Madeleine McCann disappeared on Thursday evening, May 3, 2007. She was just
under four years old. Madeleine had been on holiday with her parents and
siblings in the resort of Praia da Luz in the Algarve,
Portugal. She disappeared from an apartment in which they were staying, in the central
area of the resort. Madeleine and her two-year-old twin siblings had been left
unsupervised in a ground floor bedroom while her parents ate at a restaurant
some 100 yards
away.
The Portuguese Police's initial investigation concluded that she had been
abducted. Further investigation by the police led to the hypothesis and
statement that she might be dead. The parents were confirmed not to be
suspects. There were several unconfirmed sightings of Madeleine in Portugal and elsewhere
during the investigation and additional forensic evidence was obtained. The
police investigating her disappearance however, admitted that the investigation
was nowhere near any breakthrough.
The British and Portuguese police cooperated in the investigation
demonstrating the differing methodologies employed regarding such aspects as
the amount of information released to the public and the legal status of those
involved in the case. The breadth and longevity in the media coverage of this
disappearance was notable due to the parents' active involvement in publicizing
the case, as well as to several awareness raising campaigns held by
international celebrities.
