A few tips and recommendations to help
travelers return home safely and offer their parents some peace:
| |
Family members
Avoid overbearing contact with the
backpacker. Forced, dense communication creates unnecessary tension, which
might lead to the disappearance of the backpacker.
When the backpacker calls, avoid
asking questions that can be interpreted as an insult to his independence, such
as what he is eating and how many hours he sleeps at night. We recommend that
you prepare your questions in advance.
When the long awaited phone call
arrives, immediately write down his phone number, so that you can call back in
case of disconnection. Agree on a regular contact procedures.
Equip yourself with a travel
guidebook and know exactly where your son is traveling.
Don't rush into hopeless
scenarios. Not every lack of contact for two days means the
backpacker has disappeared. There are areas such as Burma, Laos,
Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia, where it is extremely
difficult to get a phone connection.
