bullet.gif When the backpacker calls, avoid asking questions that can be interpreted as an insult to his independence, such as what he is eating and how many hours he sleeps at night. We recommend that you prepare your questions in advance.

bullet.gif Equip yourself with a travel guidebook and know exactly where your son is traveling.
bullet.gif Don't rush into hopeless scenarios. Not every lack of contact for two days means the backpacker has disappeared. There are areas such as Burma, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia, where it is extremely difficult to get a phone connection.
